High-Efficiency Corrugated Metal Packing for Industrial Distillation and Separation
Wire mesh packing is primarily made from metal wire mesh. Corrugated wire mesh packing offers low pressure drop and high separation efficiency. It is characterized by thin walls, high porosity, high flux, low resistance, heat and corrosion resistance, and excellent separation performance.
Wire mesh packing is suitable for precision and vacuum distillation equipment, providing a solution for refractory and heat-sensitive systems. Although relatively expensive, it is widely used due to its superior performance. Its advantages include a compact structure, low resistance, high mass transfer efficiency, large processing capacity, and large specific surface area (125, 150, 250, 350, 500, 700, etc.).

Key Characteristics
High number of theoretical plates, high flow rate, and low pressure drop.
Good low-load performance: The number of theoretical plates increases as gas load decreases, with almost no lower limit at low loads.
Flexible operation.
Minimal scaling-up effects.
Suitable for precision, large-scale, and high-vacuum distillation equipment.
Materials: Stainless steel, brass, phosphor bronze, low carbon steel, etc.
Stainless steel wire mesh packing can be used in mechanical draft towers, cement frame cooling towers, cross-flow and counter-flow cooling towers, as well as in precision distillation and separation of difficult-to-separate, heat-sensitive, and high-purity systems in large-scale, high-vacuum distillation equipment.

Application in Methylamine Production
Most domestic methylamine manufacturers currently use a five-tower continuous distillation process. Methylamine is synthesized from methanol and ammonia under pressure with an acidic catalyst. The production process is mature and reliable.

Basic Process
Methanol and ammonia (molar ratio 1:1.5 to 4) undergo continuous gas-phase catalytic reaction at 425–430 °C and 3.0 MPa pressure, producing a crude mixture of monomethylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine.
This mixture is continuously separated through a series of distillation columns under pressure, followed by deammoniation and dehydration, yielding industrial-grade monomethylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine.
Earlier methylamine plants used plate-type distillation columns, which were less expensive but tall, complex, and difficult to install and maintain. After careful consideration, we adopted distillation columns with metal wire mesh corrugated structured packing. This design offers:
Large specific surface area and void ratio
Low column resistance
High mass and heat transfer efficiency
Large operating flexibility
Ease of installation and maintenance
Reduction of column height by one-third

Operation Details
Raw material liquid is heated to boiling in the reboiler at the bottom of the column before entering the packing layer.
Mass and heat transfer occur efficiently on the wire mesh packing. Light components vaporize and rise, while heavy components condense and descend.
The column top has a condenser and reflux tank to provide reflux liquid.
The bottom reboiler is thermosiphon type, heated by 0.6 MPa steam to maintain the packing layer in a boiling state.
The liquid distributor is a trough-type, with interconnected troughs ensuring uniform liquid distribution.
Installation and cleaning of the packing, installation of distributors, and levelness testing are carefully inspected by dedicated personnel to ensure column performance.
